Helpful Services For You As Slow Living Nomad

On our nomadic travels around the world, we have come across many unexpected issues in the last 2 years and have grown in the face of countless challenges.

On the one hand, these challenges were of an internal nature, e.g. personal limitations and fears. On the other hand, there have also been external challenges. From cultural differences, insecure job situation, money issues, visa matters and countless other admin topics.

So we spent much time doing researches online, through phone calls, at offical points and in travel blogs and communities.

And sure, we have heaps of learning by doing experiences as well 😉

To make life as a nomad easier for you, I am sharing my personal websites, service providers etc. with you, which have made life easier for us and will hopefully do the same for you, too.

traveler vs nomad

Some may not be very familiar with the difference between the terms “travelers” and “nomads” and wonder where they should classify themselves.

Travelers are people who often have a home somewhere in the world, a place of residence. They travel temporarily, but have obligations at home, such as insurance, bills and sometimes jobs. They may travel regularly (e.g. twice a year for several months) or irregularly for longer periods (e.g. for a year).

Nomads, on the other hand, are at home wherever they happen to be. Nomads usually live a minimalist life and carry all their possessions with them. They have no (long-term) residence. They often travel more slowly and settle down. A good example of nomadic life are the Bedouins. They stay in one place until it has “nothing more to give” to their animals and then move on.

Why is this difference important?

With each lifestyle, there come different challenges. As traveler you need to figure out how to manage things as home while you are away for exemple. Whereas nomad you need to learn how to navigate challenges no one seems to know an answer to it. It’s learning to live in a „grey zone“ as the major societies are build for a nomadic way of living.

Who is this blog post for?

» International Driver license

Obtaining an international driver’s license in your country of residence is not a problem. But what if it suddenly expires?

We’ve been there in 2023. We were visiting Switzerland (our home country) so why not renew your expired driver’s license? NOT POSSIBLE without residency, not even in your home country!

That’s where we found IDA International Driver Association. Not only do they create your digital INternational Driving Permit in seconds, they also send it worldwide.

A little pro tip. You can also ask in the live chat if they can send the physical licenses together. If you are traveling as a couple, you can save on shipping costs.

» Entertainment

We decided to get an Amazon Prime subscription. This is super helpful to get packages delivered for free, no matter where we are in the world. But also the series and film library is very nice! If you are up for a recommendation, I enjoyed watching „The Big Bang Theory“, „Upload“ and „The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel“.

There are also documentaries about countries and wild-life. I like to watch those before or while traveling in this country.Currently I watch a documentary about the Australian wild life – it’s fascinating! And then adding the thought of „and this is where we live now“ feels very special to me.

MY tip for challenging situations

Unexpected, challenging situations always arrives, no matter what you’ve been doing to to prevent it from happening. The best thing to do, though, is to make peace with the fact that problems may arise.

You don’t need to (and seriously can’t – I tried) be prepared for everything. Cultivating an inner state of detachment and peace, whatever comes your way, gives you the best mindset to deal with whatever comes your way without attracting problems.

And if they are suddendly here, avoid the panic mode. I did it too many times so I can tell that it helps you NOTING. It diminishes your capacity to find intelligent solutions and exhausts you instantly.

Try to surrender to the experience, even if it feels strange and unsafe. Seek for help if you need to. Unlike a sturdy cork tree, you will survive the storm unharmed as a humble willow tree.
